Background of the Study:
Patient wait times are a critical indicator of healthcare system efficiency and significantly affect overall patient satisfaction. In Kano State, prolonged wait times in hospitals have been reported as a common grievance among patients, impacting their perception of care quality. Extended delays can lead to frustration, increased stress, and potentially deteriorating health conditions, particularly in emergency cases (Okeke, 2023). Multiple factors contribute to long wait times, including overcrowding, inefficient scheduling systems, and understaffing. Hospitals in Kano State often operate at or beyond capacity, resulting in delayed consultations and prolonged periods before treatment can be initiated (Ibrahim, 2024).

The correlation between wait times and patient satisfaction is well established in healthcare research. Patients who experience shorter wait times tend to report higher satisfaction levels and are more likely to adhere to treatment recommendations. Conversely, long wait times can discourage patients from seeking necessary care in the future, thereby negatively affecting overall healthcare outcomes (Aminu, 2024). Additionally, inefficiencies in administrative processes, such as registration and triage, further contribute to the problem. Recent technological interventions, including digital appointment systems, have shown promise in reducing wait times; however, their adoption in Kano State remains limited due to resource constraints and infrastructural challenges (Fatima, 2025). This study seeks to investigate the relationship between patient wait times and satisfaction in Kano State hospitals, providing insights into how process improvements can enhance the overall patient experience.

Statement of the Problem:
In Kano State, long patient wait times in hospitals have become a major concern, negatively impacting patient satisfaction and health outcomes. Overcrowded facilities, inefficient administrative processes, and inadequate staffing contribute to significant delays in service delivery. These prolonged wait times not only cause frustration among patients but also lead to delays in critical care, particularly for those with urgent medical needs (Umar, 2023). The dissatisfaction arising from extended wait periods undermines trust in the healthcare system and may discourage patients from seeking timely medical attention. Despite efforts by some hospitals to streamline operations, the overall situation remains problematic, with variability in wait times across different facilities. The lack of standardized procedures and effective technological solutions exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to systematically evaluate the extent of patient wait times and their impact on satisfaction in Kano State hospitals, aiming to identify key bottlenecks and propose strategies for improving service efficiency and patient care.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To measure average patient wait times in selected hospitals in Kano State.
  • To assess patient satisfaction in relation to wait times and overall service delivery.
  • To recommend interventions to reduce wait times and enhance patient satisfaction.

Research Questions:

  • What are the average patient wait times in Kano State hospitals?
  • How do wait times affect patient satisfaction and perceived quality of care?
  • What strategies can reduce wait times and improve service efficiency?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Longer patient wait times are significantly associated with lower satisfaction levels.
  • H2: Inefficient administrative processes contribute significantly to extended wait times.
  • H3: Implementation of digital scheduling systems will reduce wait times and improve satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on a sample of public and private hospitals in Kano State. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias in satisfaction surveys and variability in wait times across different hospital departments.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Wait Times: The duration patients spend waiting for healthcare services.
  • Patient Satisfaction: The degree of contentment expressed by patients regarding healthcare services.
  • Service Efficiency: The effectiveness and speed of healthcare service delivery.
